The Jacksonville History Center

Just a short drive from Ponte Vedra Beach, downtown Jacksonville holds stories that shaped the entire First Coast. In this episode of Discover Ponte Vedra, Lisa Barton visits the historic Old St. Andrews Church to speak with Dr. Allen Bliss, CEO of the Jacksonville History Center, about the city's unique past.

For residents of Northeast Florida, the appeal of the area goes beyond the beautiful coastline and modern amenities; it also lies in the deep, fascinating roots of the region.

From Cowford to a Union Stronghold

While Jacksonville celebrated its bicentennial in 2022, its story began as a small river hamlet originally known as Cowford. As Dr. Bliss explains, the city has always followed a distinct path.

During the Civil War, Jacksonville was unique among Southern cities; it did not support secessionist candidates and functioned primarily as a Union Army garrison town. This strategic position on the river set the stage for a different kind of development than the rest of the South.

The Great Fire of 1901: A City Reborn

The St. Johns River, one of the few in the U.S. that flows north, has always been the lifeblood of the city. However, the skyline we see today was born from tragedy.

The Great Fire of 1901 obliterated the city but created a "blank canvas" that attracted ambitious architects and entrepreneurs. This surge of rebuilding gave downtown Jacksonville its modern identity, turning a disaster into an opportunity for renaissance.

A Testament to Resilience

The episode takes place at Old St. Andrews Church, the oldest religious building in downtown Jacksonville to survive the Great Fire, thanks to the natural barrier of Hogan’s Creek. Once on the brink of demolition in the 1990s, this architectural gem was rescued by the Historical Society. Today, it stands alongside the Merrill Museum House as a center for education and a reminder of the city's enduring spirit.
