Today, Fleming Island is a vibrant residential community just west of Jacksonville on the St Johns River. Major residential developments include Eagle Harbor, Pace Island and Fleming Island Plantation. Fleming Island High School, which opened in 2003, is the only high school on the island.
Fleming Island is a residential community that offers a variety of outdoor activities such as boating and hiking. Fleming Island is southwest of Jacksonville and is conveniently located to NAS/Jax and downtown Jacksonville. Outdoor priorities are important in the area and Fleming Island offers 7 miles of walking, biking, and running trails. Black Creek Park, is situated in the south part of Fleming Island and borders Black Creek and affords bikers and hikers nature trails. The north part of Fleming Island there is a newly opened park called Moccasin Slough on Westover Road and is a lovely spot for nature lovers. Moccasin Slough includes a small canal that connects to Doctors Lake. Residents can enjoy access to Doctors Lake as it is navigable among the swampy portions by canoe or small boat. Fleming island borders The St. Johns River which allows for deep water access for avid boaters.
