Tax Incentives on Energy Saving Products and Home Improvements
As promised in the Homes of the Future blog, here’s the follow-up on energy rebates from Heather, your favorite guest blogger.
There are multiple tax incentives available from the federal and state governments for home products that increase energy efficiency. These incentives apply to items installed in 2009 and 2010.
Examples of the types of home improvements eligible for the tax incentives covered by the federal government include certain:
- Insulation and sealing, replacement windows, skylights, and external doors, window films, and roofs.
- Home heating and cooling equipment.
- Solar systems, small wind systems, and geothermal heat pumps.
See www.energytaxincentives.org for specific details on each of the above categories.
In order to receive the federal tax credit, you will need certification from the manufacturer, installer, or retailer stating that the specific product is eligible. In addition, you will need to complete and submit IRS Residential Energy Efficiency Property Form 5695.
If you are hoping for state rebates (Florida), you may have more difficulty. Several of the rebate programs are very popular and are have already exceeded budgeted amounts. For more information about availability of incentives and funding, please visit the Florida Energy & Climate Commission’s website.
Other helpful websites for more information on these topics include the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s and the U.S. Department of Energy’s websites.
