Remodeling to Improve Energy Efficiency

Living in an older home and not quite sure how to make it more energy efficient?  Consider these eco-friendly changes:

  • Upgrading the air conditioning and heating systems.
  • Adding tankless water heaters.
  • Replacing windows with low-e windows.
  • Repainting with nontoxic paints.
  • Retrofitting insulated areas with energy efficient spray foam insulation.

Other renovations that you can consider in order to reduce your home’s carbon footprint include:

  • Planting shade trees on east and south facing sides of the home.
  • Applying window tints or solar shades, particularly on the sides of the home that receive the most sun.
  • And, don’t forget to ask about recycling programs for carpets, paint, and other remnants that result from home remodeling projects.

Several websites are available to give you more information and help guide your energy choices including a list of certified green home remodelers and picking energy efficient windows, among many others.
