Fire Safety Tips to Protect Your Family

Winter is upon us and according to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly half of all home heating fires occur during the winter months.  It’s always wise to review safety tips and make sure you and your family have an escape plan in place.

Here are a few suggestions to make sure you’re prepared to act fast in case of a fire (courtesy of the U.S. Fire Administration):

  • Plan two routes of escape out of each room.  If the primary way is blocked by fire or smoke, you will need a second way out.  Make sure you identify an alternative exit.
  • Make sure windows are not stuck and screens can be taken out quickly.
  • Keep exits clear of debris, toys, and boxes.
  • Make sure that security bars on doors and windows have a quick-release latch.
  • Keep smoke alarms clean of dust and debris, which can interfere with proper operation.
  • Install working smoke alarms in every level of your home and in every sleeping room, particularly if you sleep with the doors closed.  Test batteries monthly and change yearly.
  • Never open doors that are hot to the touch – escape another way.
  • Designate a meeting place outside and once out, STAY OUT.
  • When a fire occurs, don’t waste time saving property. Escape first, then notify the fire department using the 911 system.
  • Young children have a tendency to hide when they are scared.  When your family practices your home fire exit plan, talk with children about the importance of following the plan and not hiding.

In addition, always use caution with space heaters.  St. Johns County Fire Rescue has the following recommendations regarding using space heaters or fireplaces for warmth this winter:

  • Space heaters need space.  Keep all things that can burn, such as paper, bedding, or furniture at least three feet away from heating equipment.
  • Turn portable heaters off when you leave the room.
  • Plug power cords only into outlets with sufficient capacity and never into an extension cord.
  • Inspect for cracked, frayed, or broken plugs, or loose connections.  Replace before using.
  • Have your chimney inspected each year and cleaned if necessary.
  • Use a sturdy fireplace screen.
  • Allow ashes to cool before disposing.  Discard in a metal container only.
