Bird Island in Ponte Vedra Beach has Grand Opening
Long awaited Bird Island, between the fire station and library on A1A in Ponte Vedra Beach, is now open. Officials, donors, and members of the board of directors all came together on October 15th to support the official opening.
Bobby Weed, a Ponte Vedra Beach golf course designer, donated the plans for Bird Island. The Park highlights many of the ecosystems and native plants of Northeast Florida. There are many great features including a boardwalk, walking trails, sculptures, a sea turtle-shaped maze, educational signs, wooden pavilions, benches, a storytelling area, and a children’s play area.
The project has been underway for eight years and many local businesses contributed resources to the initial phases. Community members also provided volunteer hours to help the park to fruition. Phases one and two are complete. Additional funds are necessary to complete phase three which would complete the boardwalk around the lake and create an additional pavilion.
There are already a variety of activities planned for Bird Island and board members are hoping that it will draw many community members and events.
